Dr. McCann has been providing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery care in the tri-cities area since 1994. He is currently the President of the Canadian Dental Society of Anesthesiology and also has served as the Division Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at both St. Mary’s General and Grand River Hospitals.

Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Dr. McCann completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1977. He went on to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the same institution in 1985. Upon graduation, he was promoted to Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces and served as a general dentist in the Military until 1989. He then entered the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anesthesia program at the University of Toronto and completed his training in 1993. His training exposed him to a wide range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, but also to anesthesia, medicine, and acute care.

Since graduation he has practiced in the tri-city area in a group practice, but mostly in solo practice in Kitchener-Waterloo. He is an active staff member at St. Mary’s General and Grand River Hospital where he has been the Division Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also a member of the Medicine and Therapeutics Committee at both hospitals. He has contributed to several publications in both dental and surgical literature on a variety of topics in medicine and anesthesia. He has been the President of the Canadian Dental Society of Anesthesiology since 2010. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in providing a forum for continuing education in the area of anesthesiology for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons across Canada. Dr. McCann also serves as an examiner in the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

In 2007, Dr. McCann completed the written and oral examinations of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA). The ADSA is a society dedicated to continuing education and the advancement of anesthesia and sedation science. Successful completion of these examinations granted Diplomate status in the ADSA. He continues to attend ADSA scientific meetings on a yearly basis.
