Patient Guide

First Visit

We look forward to welcoming you to our office! Here is a great video of what to expect when you visit us for the first time.

Your first visit to our office will consist of a review of your medical history and presenting complaint. An examination of the head and neck will be completed at the same time. On some occasions, we may need to take various radiographs (x-rays) to further define the problem. The importance of this first visit cannot be understated. It provides Dr. McCann the opportunity to evaluate your general state of health and to ensure that it is optimal for the procedures that may be required.

In some cases, your procedure will need to be delayed until your health can be optimized. There are other cases where certain medications that you are taking will need to be withheld. All of these decisions are designed to ensure that you are treated safely in our office.

Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. In the interest of patient safety, it is strongly advised that all patients be thoroughly assessed first, and then treated at another time. In certain situations, it may be possible to complete your procedure on the same day, however, a complex medical history or treatment plan will require an evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:

  • Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable.
  • A list of medications you are presently taking. Please ensure that this list is up-to-date, and includes the dose and frequency of the medications that you are taking. Since many herbal and homeopathic remedies can affect your care, please ensure that you list these as well.
  • IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.

A preoperative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery.

Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.).

X-Rays

If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.
